Why do you need a credit card to rent a car?

Get up to $250 interest-free right when you need it

Usually, yes. Most car rental companies want a credit card in the driver’s name to place a security deposit (an authorization hold) when you pick up the car.

Some companies may allow a debit card, but it often comes with extra rules.

  • Enjoy unlimited transactions and free e-transfers (never worry about fees when sending money to someone again).

Why Rental Companies Prefer Credit Cards

Rental companies use a security deposit to protect themselves if:

  • the car is returned late

  • there is damage

  • there are extra charges

That deposit is often easiest to place on a credit card.

Can You Rent With a Debit Card Instead?

Sometimes. It depends on the company and the exact location.

Here are real examples of how policies can differ in Canada:

  • Avis (Canada): Canada locations don’t accept bank debit cards as credit identification at pickup. Debit may be acceptable for payment when you return the car, but a credit card is still required to pick up in many cases.

  • Enterprise (Canada): Debit cards may be accepted, but airport rentals can require a ticketed return itinerary for debit card pickup. If you do not have that, they may require a credit card plus extra funds.

  • Alamo (Canada): Canadian locations can have strict debit rules, including requiring a ticketed return itinerary, and some Canadian debit cards may not be accepted at certain airport locations.

  • Hertz: Some Hertz rentals may allow non-credit-card payment methods, but certain prepaid “Pay Now” bookings require the credit card used to book.

What to Expect If Debit Is Allowed

If a location accepts debit at pickup, they may still require:

  • a larger security hold (so you need enough money in the account)

  • extra ID

  • proof of travel plans (like a return ticket)

  • additional screening, depending on the location

Quick Checklist Before You Book

  • Read the “Forms of Payment” section for that company and location. Policies vary by city and airport.

  • Assume you need a credit card for the deposit, unless the site clearly says otherwise.

  • Avoid relying on prepaid, gift, or some debit cards for pickup. Many locations don’t accept them as credit ID.

  • Be aware of age rules. Many companies charge a young driver fee if you’re under 25.
