Most credit card refunds show up in about 3 to 7 business days, but it can take 15 to 20 business days in some cases (especially depending on the merchant and how they process refunds).

Why Refunds Take a Few Days

A refund usually has two steps:

  1. The merchant issues the refund (they press “refund” on their side)

  2. Your card issuer posts it to your account (you finally see it)

That is why it is normal to wait a few business days.

Many sources quote 3 to 5 business days as common, and some banks say 5 to 7 business days.

Why a Refund Can Take Longer

Refunds often take longer when:

  • The merchant is slow to process returns

  • Weekends and holidays slow things down

  • It is a larger purchase, travel booking, or a complicated return

  • It is a “credit” that needs extra processing on the merchant side

Some issuers recommend giving the merchant 15 business days (or even 15–20 business days) before escalating.

What to Do If You Still Do Not See the Refund

  • Check your receipt or email to confirm the refund was actually issued.

  • Wait 5 to 7 business days after the merchant says it was refunded.

  • If it is still missing, contact the merchant and ask for a refund confirmation or reference number.

  • If it has been 15 business days or more, contact your card issuer to ask what your next step is.
