What does Pre-Approved for a Credit Card Mean?

A secure, affordable way to build your credit history

Pre-approved means a lender has pre screened you and thinks you are likely to qualify for a specific credit card.

It is not a guarantee. You can still be declined after a full review.

What Pre-Approved Usually Includes

A pre-approved offer usually means the issuer has looked at basic info like your credit profile and decided you meet their early criteria.

This is often based on a soft credit check, which does not affect your credit score.

You might see the offer:

  • In your online banking

  • By email

  • By mail

What Pre-Approved Does Not Mean

Pre-approved does not mean:

  • You are guaranteed approval

  • You will get the exact limit you expect

  • You can skip the application

You can still be declined if something changed since the pre screen.

Example: new debt, missed payments, or income that does not meet the card’s rules.

Does a Pre-Approved Offer Hurt Your Credit?

Usually, no.

  • The pre screen is commonly a soft inquiry. That does not impact your score.

  • If you accept the offer and apply, the issuer may run a hard inquiry. That can cause a small, temporary drop.

Pre-Approved vs Pre-Qualified

These words are often used in similar ways. The exact meaning depends on the lender.

A simple way to think about it:

  • Pre-qualified: early estimate

  • Pre-approved: stronger signal, but still not final approval

What To Do Before You Say Yes

  1. Check the annual fee, interest rate, and any promo period.

  2. Make sure the card fits how you spend.

  3. If you are unsure, check your credit report so you know what the lender will see.

  4. Shred paper offers you do not want. It helps reduce fraud risk.
