ZIP Codes vs. Postal Codes: Which One for Canadian Credit Cards?

Share

For Canadian credit cards, you should use your Canadian postal code (the one on your billing address).

If a U.S. payment terminal asks for a ZIP code and only accepts numbers (common at gas pumps), try entering the three digits from your postal code followed by “00” (example: M4B 1G5 → 41500).

Why Websites Ask for ZIP or Postal Code

This is usually a security check to confirm the cardholder’s billing address details match what the bank has on file.

What to Enter When a Form Says “ZIP Code” (Canada vs U.S.)

If the checkout lets you pick a country

  • Pick Canada, then enter your postal code normally.

If it accepts letters and numbers

  • Enter your Canadian postal code from your billing address.

  • If it fails, try it without the space (example: M4B1G5).

If it only accepts numbers (5 digits)

Try the “00” method Mastercard recommends:

  1. Take the three digits from your postal code (in order).

  2. Add 00 at the end.

Example: A1B 2C3 → 12300

If It Still Doesn’t Work

  • Double check your billing address with your card issuer (it has to match exactly).

  • Try a different payment method, or pay inside if you’re at a U.S. gas station.

  • Contact the merchant or your card issuer to confirm what they accept.
