Stop hiding from your credit score. Start building it.

Yes, you may be able to cancel a credit card application if you act quickly.

Contact the card issuer as soon as possible and ask whether the application can still be stopped. If the application has already been approved, you may need to close the new account instead.

Cancelling the application also does not necessarily remove a credit inquiry that has already been made.

How Do You Cancel a Credit Card Application?

Contact the credit card issuer as soon as you change your mind.

You can usually call the issuer and ask about the status of your application. If it has not been processed yet, they may be able to stop it.

There is no guarantee that cancellation will still be possible. Credit card applications can sometimes be processed quickly.

Can You Cancel After Being Approved?

If the credit card has already been approved, there may no longer be an application to cancel.

Instead, you may need to close the credit card account.

Consumers in Canada have the right to cancel credit card agreements. Some provinces may also provide cooling-off periods for certain credit card contracts. The exact rules depend on where you live.

Does Cancelling a Credit Card Application Affect Your Credit Score?

The cancellation itself may not be the main issue.

When you apply for credit, the lender may access your credit report. This creates a credit-related inquiry on your file. Credit inquiries can have a small impact on your credit score.

If the lender has already completed the inquiry, cancelling the application does not automatically erase it.

Can You Remove the Hard Inquiry?

Usually not if you authorized the lender to check your credit.

The inquiry records that a lender accessed your credit report as part of an application. It can remain even if you later decide you no longer want the card.

If you see an inquiry you do not recognize, contact the company listed on your credit report.

Should You Cancel a Credit Card You Just Applied For?

That depends on why you changed your mind.

You may want to cancel if:

  • You applied for the wrong card
  • You noticed an annual fee you do not want
  • You found the card does not fit your needs
  • You applied accidentally
  • You no longer want another credit account

Before applying for another card, compare the fees and eligibility requirements carefully.
